How Much Do Headshots Actually Cost in the Bay Area? A Working Photographer's Breakdown

Headshot pricing is one of the least transparent categories in professional photography. Most photographers list "pricing available upon request," which forces every prospect into a sales conversation before they know if they can afford the work. That's annoying and it's bad for everyone.

This is what headshots actually cost in the SF Bay Area in 2026, what drives the variance, and how to figure out what you should be paying.

The actual price range

For a single professional headshot session in the Bay Area, you should expect to see prices in five rough tiers:

$0-$200 — Hobbyists, students, friends-with-cameras. Sometimes the work is great. More often the lighting is wrong, the retouching is heavy-handed, and the turnaround is whenever they feel like it. Fine for casual use. Not appropriate for your LinkedIn profile if you're trying to look senior.

$250-$450 — Working pros at the entry tier. Often outdoor or natural-light photographers without a studio. Quality varies. The good ones in this range deliver real value because they have lower overhead. The bad ones are charging hobbyist work at pro prices.

$500-$800 — Established studio photographers, single session. Climate-controlled studio, multiple lighting setups, advanced retouching included. This is what most working professionals in tech, law, and finance pay for their LinkedIn and company website photos.

$900-$1,500 — Premium and on-location. Established names. On-location work (they come to your office). Faster turnaround. Often higher-end retouching. PR/speaker/author tier.

$1,500-$5,000+ — Corporate team days and event headshots. Per-person rate goes down with volume. Most companies bring a photographer in for a half-day to shoot 10-30 team members.

What drives the variance

Four variables explain almost every price difference.

1. Location overhead. Studio sessions cost more because the photographer is paying for the studio. Outdoor and on-location sessions can be priced lower without sacrificing quality — the difference is overhead, not skill.

2. Number of final images. This is the biggest hidden variable. A $400 session that includes 1 retouched image is more expensive per image than a $425 session that includes 8 retouched images. Always check the deliverable count, not just the session price.

3. Retouching depth. Standard retouching is skin smoothing, blemish removal, color correction. Advanced retouching adds eye whitening, stray hair cleanup, background work. Premium retouching gets into composite work — swapping heads between frames, building a perfect smile from three different shots. The deeper the retouching, the higher the per-image cost.

4. Turnaround time. Same-day or 24-hour delivery costs more. Standard delivery is 3-7 business days. Some studios run 2-3 weeks during busy seasons.

What you should expect at each price point

Under $250. One session, one or two raw images delivered, minimal retouching. Suitable for: casual social media, online dating profiles, a temporary placeholder until you can budget more.

$300-$450. 30-45 minute outdoor session, one or two outfits, 5-10 retouched images, 3-7 day turnaround. Suitable for: most professionals in non-corporate fields, LinkedIn, personal website, real estate agent headshots, small business owners.

$500-$800. 45-60 minute studio session, two or three outfits, 5-15 retouched images, advanced retouching, 3-5 day turnaround. Suitable for: senior corporate roles, executive bios, published author photos, podcast hosts.

$900-$1,500. 60-90 minute session (often on-location at your office), multiple outfits and backgrounds, 10-25 retouched images, premium retouching, 1-3 day turnaround. Suitable for: C-suite, speaking circuit, PR headshots, book jackets.

$1,500+. Team days, event activations, multi-person corporate refreshes. Per-person rate drops as volume scales.

Common pricing red flags

"Pricing available upon request." This isn't always a red flag, but it usually means either (a) prices are highly negotiable, (b) prices are higher than most prospects expect, or (c) the photographer wants to pre-qualify you before quoting. None of those serve a quick decision. Photographers with public pricing make your life easier.

$99 packages with 25 "final" images. The math doesn't work. At $99 for 25 retouched images, the per-image revenue is $4. No working photographer can afford to do real retouching at that rate. The images you get back will be raw exports with basic auto-correction.

Per-image upsells after the shoot. If the base price is $200 but every retouched image costs $50 extra after the session, the real session cost for 10 images is $700. This pricing model rewards photographers who under-shoot. Avoid.

Mandatory print packages. If you can't buy digital files without also buying a $400 print package, you're paying for inventory the photographer wants to clear, not photos you actually want. Modern professional photography is digital-first. Walk away.

How to figure out what you should pay

Start with the use case.

LinkedIn profile, professional website, simple bio. You need 1-3 great images. Look in the $300-$600 range. Outdoor or natural light is fine and often better than overlit studio work.

Speaking circuit, PR materials, book promo. You need 5-10 great images with variation in pose and expression. Look in the $700-$1,200 range. Studio or controlled environment matters more here.

Corporate site refresh, multi-image executive package. You need 15+ images, multiple looks, fast delivery. Look in the $1,200-$2,500 range. On-location or premium studio.

Team day for 10+ people. Bring a photographer in for a half or full day. Per-person rate should land in the $150-$300 range depending on volume.

What I charge

For full transparency: outdoor headshot sessions on the SF Peninsula start at $425. That includes a 45-minute session at a scenic Peninsula location of your choice (or mine), up to 2 outfit changes, 8 fully retouched images delivered in 5 business days, and personal + LinkedIn + company website license.

The premium tier is $695 for 90 minutes, 15 images, two locations or three outfits, and 3-day turnaround.

No upsells. No mandatory prints. Free reschedule if the weather doesn't cooperate.

If that fits what you need, the headshots page has the booking details. If it doesn't, the breakdown above should help you pick the right photographer at the right tier for your actual use case.
