How to Shoot Portraits in Low Light (The Five Variables You Can Actually Control)

Low-light photography is taught as if it's a single problem with a single solution: open the aperture, raise the ISO, hold the camera steady. Then your photos are dark and noisy and you wonder why the tutorial didn't help.

Low light isn't one problem. It's five variables that have to work together. Most low-light photos fail because the photographer adjusted one variable and ignored the other four. This is how to think about all five.

The five variables

In order of which to think about first:

  1. The light itself: how much is there and where is it coming from
  2. The aperture: how much of that light reaches the sensor
  3. The shutter speed: how long the sensor is exposed to the light
  4. The ISO: how sensitive the sensor is to whatever light it gets
  5. The subject: how much they're moving, and how forgiving the scene is to imperfection

Most tutorials cover variables 2 through 4 and skip 1 and 5. Those are the ones that actually matter most.

Variable 1: the light itself

The single biggest mistake in low-light photography is treating "low light" as a fixed condition you have to work around. It's not. Low light has direction, color, and texture, and the way you photograph the same scene from different positions produces wildly different results.

Before you raise the ISO or open the aperture, walk around the subject. Notice where the light is coming from. A window in an otherwise dim room becomes the entire scene. A single lamp in a restaurant turns the table behind it into a backlit silhouette opportunity. A streetlight 20 feet away wraps a sidewalk subject in directional glow.

The rule: position your subject so the limited light is doing something. Behind them, beside them, raking across their face. "Low light" with directional shape produces better photos than "abundant light" pointing flat at the subject.

If the light source is a window, put the subject's face perpendicular to it so half the face is lit and half is in shadow. That's a Rembrandt portrait. It looks intentional even on a phone.

If the only light is overhead, the subject's eyes will be in shadow. Tilt their chin up so the light catches the eyes. Small adjustment, dramatic difference.

Variable 2: aperture

Open the aperture wider than you would in daylight. f/1.8 or f/2 if your lens supports it. This is the first thing to adjust because it has the lowest cost: you lose some background sharpness, but in low light that background is usually unimportant anyway.

The limit: shallow depth of field means precise focus. At f/1.8 on a 50mm lens, the in-focus zone at portrait distance is about two inches deep. The near eye sharp, the far eye soft. Aim the focus point at the near eye and don't recompose after focusing.

If your lens only opens to f/3.5 or f/5.6 (most kit zooms), this variable is mostly unavailable to you. Skip ahead to ISO and shutter speed.

Variable 3: shutter speed

The minimum shutter speed for hand-held shooting is roughly 1 over your focal length. A 50mm lens needs 1/50s minimum. A 200mm lens needs 1/200s.

Modern image stabilization extends this rule. With IBIS (in-body image stabilization), you can often shoot 2 to 3 stops slower than the rule says. A 50mm lens with IBIS can hand-hold at 1/8s or 1/15s if the subject is also still.

The trap: image stabilization helps with camera shake, not subject motion. A subject who blinks at 1/15s produces a blurred eyelash. A subject who shifts weight at 1/30s produces a blurred shoulder. For portraits specifically, you need a minimum of 1/60s even with stabilization, just to freeze the subject's natural micro-movements.

If the subject is moving (walking, talking with hand gestures), you need 1/125s or faster. That's where the calculation gets hard: every other variable has to do more work.

Variable 4: ISO

This is the last variable to adjust because raising it costs you image quality. ISO is a trade between getting the photo and getting a clean photo. In low light, the trade is usually worth it.

Modern cameras handle ISO better than they did even five years ago. A 2024-era full-frame mirrorless produces clean images at ISO 6400 and usable images at ISO 12800. APS-C cameras stay clean to about ISO 3200. Phones top out around ISO 1600 before noise dominates.

The rule: use the lowest ISO that lets you get the shutter speed and aperture you need. If your aperture is already maxed at f/1.8 and your shutter speed is at the minimum hand-holdable, raise ISO until the exposure is correct. Don't raise ISO higher than you need to.

For most low-light portrait situations, the answer lands somewhere between ISO 1600 and ISO 6400.

Noise reduction in post-processing recovers a lot of what high ISO costs. Lightroom's Denoise (the AI-powered one introduced in 2023) can rescue ISO 6400 images so cleanly that they look like ISO 800 originals. Shoot in RAW so you have the data to recover.

Variable 5: the subject

This is the variable nobody covers and the one that matters most.

A still subject in low light is easy. The shutter can be slow. The ISO can be low. The aperture doesn't have to be wide open. A portrait of someone sitting at a table, leaning slightly into the light, is a beginner-friendly low-light shot.

A moving subject in low light is the hardest photography there is. Sports under stadium lights, kids playing in a dim room, anyone walking or gesturing. Every variable above is fighting you.

The move: pose the subject deliberately into stillness. Ask them to lean against something. Anchor a hand on a table. Cross their arms. Stillness is something you can ask for and it dramatically simplifies the technical problem.

If you can't ask for stillness (street photography, candid moments), accept that some frames will be soft. Shoot more frames. The ones that work are the ones where the subject was momentarily still between movements.

Working examples

Restaurant table, single overhead light. Aperture f/1.8. Shutter 1/60s (slow enough for the dim light, fast enough to freeze the subject). ISO 3200. Position the subject so the overhead light is behind and above, slightly to one side. The light wraps the shoulder and side of the face. The eyes get caught by tilting the chin up slightly.

Living room at night, one lamp on. Aperture f/2. Shutter 1/80s. ISO 1600 to 3200. Place the subject so the lamp is at 45 degrees to one side, about three feet away. The lamp becomes a soft directional light source. The unlit side of the face holds detail because of the room's ambient bounce.

Outdoor portrait at twilight (the 20 minutes after sunset). Aperture f/2.8. Shutter 1/125s. ISO 800 to 1600. Position the subject facing the brightest remaining glow in the sky. The light is soft, directional, and cool. Skin tones need a small white-balance warm-up in post.

Concert or event under stage lighting. Aperture f/1.8 or f/2. Shutter 1/250s or faster (subject is moving and lights are flickering). ISO 6400 to 12800. Spot-meter on the subject's face, not the stage lights. Underexpose by 1 stop and lift in post; the alternative is blown-out stage lights ruining the frame.

When flash makes sense

For most low-light portraits, flash is the wrong answer. It overpowers the ambient light that was making the scene interesting in the first place.

Flash makes sense when:

  • You have a flash with bounce capability and a nearby white ceiling. Bounce flash mimics overhead diffused light and preserves the room's ambient feel.
  • You're shooting events with fast subject movement and the alternative is unusable noise.
  • You can position the flash off-camera, off to one side, so it adds directional shape rather than flat fill.

Flash mounted on the camera, pointed straight at the subject, produces the worst low-light portrait of all the options. Skip it if that's all you have.

The progression

Beginner low-light photo: raise ISO until the exposure is right. Live with the noise.

Intermediate low-light photo: open the aperture first, then raise ISO. Compose around the available light.

Advanced low-light photo: move the subject relative to the light source until the light is shaping the face, then dial in the exposure. The photo works because of where the subject is standing, not because of the camera settings.

Most photographers stop at the intermediate stage. That's enough for usable photos. The leap to advanced takes a lot of practice and benefits enormously from a second pair of eyes.
