Manual Mode Explained: Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Without the Jargon

Most manual mode tutorials lose the reader in the first paragraph by leading with the exposure triangle. The exposure triangle is the right answer to the wrong question. The right question is: what does each of the three settings actually do to my photo, and when do I change one over the others?

This is the explanation I give private students after we've established that they bought a real camera and want to actually use it. No physics. No light meters. Just what each control does and when to reach for it.

The three things you control

Manual mode means you set three things yourself: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Every other camera mode (Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Auto) sets one or more of these for you. Manual mode forces you to make all three choices.

That sounds harder than it is. After a week of practice, you'll be making all three choices in under two seconds. The skill is knowing which one to change when.

Let's go through them in the order you'll think about them in real life.

Aperture: how much background blur do you want

Aperture controls two things: how much light gets into the camera, and how much of the photo is in sharp focus front-to-back. The two are linked. You can't change one without changing the other.

The number is written as f/1.4, f/2.8, f/5.6, f/11. The lower the number, the wider open the aperture, the more light gets in, and the less of the photo is in focus.

Why this matters in practical terms:

f/1.4 to f/2.8 ("wide open"). Background is dreamy and out of focus. Subject pops. This is the look people associate with portrait photography. Use it for: portraits, food shots, anything where you want the eye drawn to one specific thing.

f/4 to f/5.6 ("middle"). Background is softly out of focus but recognizable. Whole subject is sharp. Use it for: small group portraits, environmental shots, situations where you want some background context but not perfectly sharp.

f/8 to f/11 ("stopped down"). Everything from foreground to background is sharp. Use it for: landscapes, group photos of 5+ people, architecture, anything where you need the whole scene in focus.

f/16 and beyond. Image quality starts to soften from a physics phenomenon called diffraction. Rarely worth using. Stop at f/11 unless you have a specific reason.

When you're starting: pick aperture first based on the look you want, then figure out the other two settings.

Shutter speed: are you freezing motion or letting it blur

Shutter speed controls how long the camera's sensor is exposed to light. Faster shutter (1/1000s) freezes motion. Slower shutter (1/15s) shows motion as blur.

The number is written as fractions of a second: 1/2000, 1/500, 1/60, 1/15, 1 second, 30 seconds. The bigger the bottom number, the faster the shutter.

Practical guidance for each range:

1/1000s or faster. Freezes everything. Use for sports, wildlife, kids running, anything fast.

1/250s to 1/500s. Freezes most casual motion. Use for: most outdoor photography, walking subjects, hand-held shots in good light.

1/60s to 1/125s. The slowest you can hand-hold a camera without obvious blur. Below 1/60s, your own hand shake starts to show in the image. Use for: indoor available-light photos with stationary subjects.

1/30s and slower. You need a tripod, or you're going for intentional motion blur. Use for: long exposure landscapes, light trails, waterfall smoothing.

There's a rule of thumb: minimum hand-held shutter speed equals 1 over your focal length. A 50mm lens needs at least 1/50s. A 200mm lens needs at least 1/200s. Image stabilization in modern cameras buys you 2-3 stops, so this rule is softer than it used to be.

ISO: the setting you change last

ISO is the camera sensor's sensitivity to light. Higher ISO means more sensitivity, which means you can shoot in lower light. The cost is image noise: grainy texture in dark areas.

The number doubles each step: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400, 12800. Modern full-frame cameras produce clean images up to ISO 3200 or 6400. APS-C cameras start showing noise around 1600-3200. Phone cameras hit the noise wall around 800-1600.

The rule: use the lowest ISO that lets you get the shutter speed and aperture you want.

ISO 100-400. Daylight. Clean image. Always preferred when light allows.

ISO 800-1600. Indoor available light, cloudy days, shaded outdoor scenes. Still clean on most cameras.

ISO 3200-6400. Low light. Useful when the alternative is camera shake or motion blur. Image quality degrades but the photo gets taken.

ISO 12800 and above. Emergency only. Use when you'd rather have a noisy photo than no photo.

The actual workflow

This is the order I think through settings when I lift the camera to my eye.

  1. Aperture. What depth of field do I want? Set it.
  2. Shutter speed. What's moving in the scene? Set it fast enough to freeze it (or slow enough to blur it if that's the intent).
  3. ISO. Whatever it needs to be to get the exposure right with the first two settings locked.

The first two are creative decisions. The third is the math that makes them work.

If the exposure is too dark at the highest acceptable ISO, you have a problem. You can either: open the aperture wider (less depth of field), slow the shutter (risk motion blur), add light (flash, reflector), or wait for better natural light.

How to practice this

Put the camera in manual mode. Pick a scene with a clear subject. Try the same shot three times:

  1. f/2.8, shutter as needed, ISO as needed
  2. f/5.6, shutter as needed, ISO as needed
  3. f/11, shutter as needed, ISO as needed

Compare the three. Notice how the background changes. Notice the difference in how the subject pops. Now you have an intuitive sense of what aperture does.

Repeat with shutter speed. Find a moving subject (water, traffic, kids). Try 1/1000, 1/60, and 1/8. Compare.

Repeat with ISO. Indoor scene, set aperture and shutter to constants. Try ISO 200, 800, and 3200. Notice the noise.

This takes a weekend. After it, manual mode stops feeling like math and starts feeling like instinct.

When to use manual vs other modes

Manual mode is the right choice when the light is consistent (studio, fixed location, planned scene) or when you want a specific look the camera won't pick on its own.

Manual is a slower choice when light is changing rapidly. For street photography or unpredictable events, Aperture Priority mode (where you set aperture and ISO, camera picks shutter speed) often works better. You stay in creative control of depth of field while the camera handles exposure changes.

Most working photographers use Aperture Priority for unpredictable shoots and Manual for controlled ones. Knowing both is the goal.

What manual mode won't fix

Manual mode doesn't fix bad light. It doesn't fix bad composition. It doesn't fix a subject that doesn't want to be photographed. It just gives you control over how the camera records the scene in front of you.

Most beginner photographers stop using manual mode after a month because they realize the camera's auto settings make the same exposure decisions they would. That's correct. Manual is most useful when you specifically want to override the camera, not as a default.

Learn it. Use it when it matters. Switch back to Aperture Priority when it doesn't. The pros do both.
